This is a picturesque abbey built on the site of the original monastic church established by St. Columba in the late 500's. The original abbey was destroyed over the years by numerous Viking raids and a new abbey was rebuilt circa 1200. It is believed that the book of Kells now residing at Trinity College in Dublin was created here.
